It’s claimed by Goal that United have now submitted an opening offer for Dembele, who they’ve been tracking since his youth time at PSG.

After leaving the French superpower, he began his senior career with Fulham before spending two years at Celtic.

Then, last summer, the 22-year-old joined Lyon and was joint fourth top scorer in his debut Ligue 1 season.

Barnes was on holiday with his family in Santorini, but his flight to the Spanish capital was cancelled so he was forced to take a marathon detour.

The 55-year-old flew to Athens before catching a connecting flight to Barcelona, where he was due to board a train.

But Barnes arrived at the station in Barcelona at 2am, three hours before his train, and two hours before the doors opened.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I was with my family in Santorini, I had to be here at 8:30am on Thursday morning.

“My flight from Santorini got cancelled, so I then had to fly from Santorini to Athens, from Athens to Barcelona.

“I got to Barcelona at 2am, I had to get a train to Madrid, it was not until 5am, the train station is not open until 4am.

From 2am until 4am I was lying on the floor outside the train station with a lot of homeless people before the train station opened.

“That’s how committed I was to getting here.”

While Barnes was willing to go to the ends of the earth for his side, the former England international could not resist having a cheeky dig at his former Liverpool teammate Ian Rush.

“I am not going to mention any names, about other divas who played for Liverpool, my former teammates who would have wanted to be in a five star hotel,” he said.

“I slept on the floor of the train station for three hours, that is how much of a fan I am. I am not going to say who wouldn’t have done it… Ian Rush… But apart from that, that is my commitment to the cause.”

Liverpool legend John Barnes says he had to sleep outside of a train station in Barcelona with homeless people on his journey to Madrid for the Champions League final. The 55-year-old travelled to the Spanish capital to see his former side take on Tottenham in the European decider at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

It was a miserable season for Huddersfield Town after their relegation was confirmed, with Cardiff City and Fulham returning to the Championship instantaneously.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer experienced the highs and lows of management with a rather limp end to Manchester United’s season overshadowing his terrific start.

There were no such struggles from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who qualified for the Europa League ahead of Everton and Leicester City.

And Manuel Pellegrini secured a top ten finish against the odds for West Ham United, while the future of Rafael Benitez at Newcastle United remains unclear.

The Spanish giants crashed out of the Champions League after surrendering a 3-0 first leg lead to Liverpool in the semi-finals earlier this month, before losing to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

Spanish newspaper Sport claim Martinez, who is managing the Belgium national team, has been contacted by Nou Camp chiefs regarding the Barca job.

The former Everton and Swansea boss took charge of Belgium in 2016 and guided them to a third-placed finish at last summer’s World Cup.

He has one year left on his contract and could be tempted to take one of Europe’s biggest jobs.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu refused to blame Valverde for the club’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final, insisting the season had not been a failure.

He said: “We’ve been thinking about next season for some time, but this isn’t the moment to explain what will happen.

“We won the league, so it has been an important season. Valverde has a contract and is the coach.

“This defeat was not the fault of our coach. We had many chances and the ball didn’t go in.

“I wouldn’t consider this season a failure. It was very good without being excellent. We lost a couple of matches here and at Anfield that cost us two titles.”

Further reports in Spain, from Mundo Deportivo, say Martinez is on a four-man shortlist to take over from Valverde, along with Arsenal’s Unai Emery, departing Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

Newcastle United transfer news: Mike Ashley ‘reluctant’ to sign Salomon Rondon on permanent deal this summer

Mike Ashley is reportedly not keen on making Salomon Rondon a permanent Newcastle United player in the summer.

Rondon has been a big hit with the Magpies this season and has nine Premier League goals for Rafael Benitez’s side.

The Venezuela international, who scored in Friday’s 3-1 friendly win against Argentina, was one of Benitez’s top targets last summer and got his man on loan.

The 29-year-old has a release clause in his contract of £16.5million, provided the Baggies don’t get promoted. If they do return to the Premier League, the price will increase.

The Daily Star report that Newcastle owner Ashley, who has failed to find a buyer for the club, is reluctant to sign off on the transfer due to the striker turning 30 in September.

They also report that he has told Benitez he will sanction another big deal, after the £21million signing of Miguel Almiron, but only for younger players whose transfer market value is likely to increase.

It is not just the Newcastle faithful who Rondon has impressed.

Former Ireland striker and talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino believes he has the potential to be a “£50million striker”.

“In January last year, Alan Pardew persuaded West Bromwich Albion to turn down £38million from China for Salomon Rondon,” Cascarino told The Times.

“If he keeps playing like this, he could be a £50million striker. There hasn’t been a better signing this season, but he is only on loan at Newcastle. If they can make it permanent, they should because he can be a Champions League player.”

Newcastle boss Benitez has also yet to sign a new contract with negotiations thought to be on-going.

Ashley wants him to stay but the Spaniard wants assurances that investment will be made in the playing squad.

David Moyes: Former Manchester United and Everton boss’ odds slashed to become new Scotland manager

The odds on David Moyes becoming the new Scotland manager have been slashed to 11/10.

The former Man United and Everton boss was priced at 3/1 on Oddschecker, but they were shortened after a flurry of bets were placed on him to succeed Alex McCleish on Friday morning.

Scotland Under-21s coach Scot Gemmill is the second favourite on 11/8, while Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke is the third-best bet at 3/1.

John Hill, a spokesman for Coral, explained that Moyes has quickly become the favourite after an influx of money came in for him to land the hot-seat.

He said: “We have been knocked over with interest in David Moyes in the last 24 hours and, as a result, the former Everton and Manchester United manager is now the new favourite to get the job.”

Moyes, who has also managed  Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, was seen in attendance at several Scottish Premiership matches last weekend.

He watched Celtic’s home win against Kilmarnock, St Johnstone’s draw with St Mirren and Rangers’ victory over Aberdeen.

Other names on the betting shortlist to succeed McLeish is another former West Ham manager, Slaven Bilic, who is priced at 9/1, former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson at 10/1 and Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes at 14/1.

Moyes has been out of management since he was sacked as manager of the West Ham at the end of last season.

He guided the Hammers to a 13th place finish in the English top-flight.

Manchester United news: The Sir Alex Ferguson legacy lives on with just four players in starting XI vs Barca signed after his retirement

The legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United is clearly evident six years after his retirement as manager of the club.

Since Ferguson called it a day in 2013, after 1,500 games in charge, the Red Devils have had four different permanent bosses.

They have also spent more than £800million on transfers with a net spend of £552million.

Despite the enormous amount spent on players, in the starting line-up against Barcelona, a game they lost 3-0, there were just four players signed in the post-Ferguson era.

The rest were either signings made by the legendary manager or have come through the youth ranks.

It perhaps illustrates the need for an extensive overhaul in the summer under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, something the boss has said is likely to happen.
