Mike Ashley is reportedly not keen on making Salomon Rondon a permanent Newcastle United player in the summer.
Rondon has been a big hit with the Magpies this season and has nine Premier League goals for Rafael Benitez’s side.
The striker is on a season-long loan from Championship side West Brom.
The Venezuela international, who scored in Friday’s 3-1 friendly win against Argentina, was one of Benitez’s top targets last summer and got his man on loan.
The 29-year-old has a release clause in his contract of £16.5million, provided the Baggies don’t get promoted. If they do return to the Premier League, the price will increase.
The Daily Star report that Newcastle owner Ashley, who has failed to find a buyer for the club, is reluctant to sign off on the transfer due to the striker turning 30 in September.
They also report that he has told Benitez he will sanction another big deal, after the £21million signing of Miguel Almiron, but only for younger players whose transfer market value is likely to increase.
It is not just the Newcastle faithful who Rondon has impressed.
Former Ireland striker and talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino believes he has the potential to be a “£50million strikerâ€.
“In January last year, Alan Pardew persuaded West Bromwich Albion to turn down £38million from China for Salomon Rondon,†Cascarino told The Times.
“If he keeps playing like this, he could be a £50million striker. There hasn’t been a better signing this season, but he is only on loan at Newcastle. If they can make it permanent, they should because he can be a Champions League player.â€
