David Moyes admits he would prefer return to club management amid links with Celtic and Scotland jobs

David Moyes has told talkSPORT he would favour a return to club football over an international job, amid links with the managerial roles at Scotland and Celtic.

The former Manchester United and Everton boss has been out of work since he left West Ham at the end of last season.

Moyes was not kept on at West Ham despite guiding the Hammers to Premier League safety

The 57-year-old is currently the favourite to succeed Alex McLeish as manager of the Scotland national team, after he was spotted in the stands at three different Scottish Premiership games over the weekend.

But the Glaswegian and ex-Celtic player is also the second favourite to take over at Parkhead, behind caretaker boss Neil Lennon.

And while Moyes admitted he has ‘itchy feet’ and would be open to his first foray into international management, he said the day-to-day operations of a club is more to his liking.

“I’ve always had itchy feet,” the Scot said on Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“I prefer the day-to-day but can I see myself being a national manager? Of course.

“Scotland is not an easy job and it hasn’t been an easy job for whoever has been in charge for quite a while now.

“But at the moment my first choice would be to go back into club management.

“I think I’d be open to whatever’s right [England or Scotland]. The best league to manage in is the English Premier League.

“I played for Celtic.

“But I’ve got to say, if I got a chance to go back and work in Spain again or a chance to work in Germany or Italy I would take those opportunities as well.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon condemns own fans after sectarian abuse aimed at Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes

Celtic could face punishment from the Scottish FA after a section of fans aimed sectarian abuse at Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes.

The Hoops clinched their eighth successive top-flight title with a 3-0 win at Aberdeen on Saturday.

Derek McInnes was targeted by Celtic fans again

But the celebrations were marred with the sectarian slurs directed towards McInnes, who was subjected to the same abuse by Celtic fans in last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

The former Rangers midfielder was serving a one-game touchline ban after making gestures to Celtic supporters who branded him a ‘sad orange b*****d’.

Defending his close pal, Lennon said: “I am disappointed to say the least.

“I am disappointed for Derek, because I know what a great guy he is, he is a great football man with great integrity. I am sorry he wasn’t in the dugout today.

“I am a huge admirer of what he has done this year, and what he has done previously.”

McInnes hit out at Celtic fans’ sectarian chants and asked if the SFA were listening.

He said: “Of course I heard it because I have been hearing it for years.

“It is not if I hear it, that is not the question, the question should be are other people hearing it?

“The biggest surprise would have been if I had not heard it today, as you all know, so it is what it is.

“There has been a missed opportunity to send out the right message. I served my punishment today and I will be back in the dugout next week.”

In February, Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke accused Rangers fans of living in the dark ages after he was called a ‘Fenian b*****d’.

“It’s lovely being back in the west of Scotland, really nice,” he said.

“When I was approached by Rangers about taking over the job here I was assured that ‘we don’t have that in the west of Scotland anymore. It’s gone’.

“They can call me a b*****d or a w****r. No problem, thanks, guys. But to call me a Fenian b*****d, come on. Where are we living in? The dark ages?

“They are not allowed to call my assistant [Alex Dyer] a black b but they can call me a Fenian b*****d. What are we doing in Scotland?”

The former Hoffenheim midfielder is now a converted centre-forward under Jurgen Klopp and, with the No.9 on his back, has turned into a fan favourite on the Kop.

While chants about Mohamed Salah’s exploits on the wing and ‘Allez, Allez, Allez’ often reverberate around Anfield, there is a more familiar tune to be heard on the banks of the Mersey.

After putting the ball into the back of the net, Firmino has begun to cup his hand to his ear as if expecting Reds fans to belt out his new tune.

But how does it go?

Pep Guardiola hits back at Ilkay Gundogan for criticising Manchester City team-mates after Tottenham defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has refuted the comments made by Ilkay Gundogan following the club’s Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat to Tottenham.

Gundogan suggested that City were ‘too nervous’ in the Champions League and also ‘always make the wrong decisions’.

The Germany international claimed City’s reaction to their penalty miss was not that of a big team.

“I don’t agree with him, absolutely not,” Guardiola said in his press conference on Friday.

“In the second half it was under control. Our game at Tottenham was much better than Schalke.

“Sergio [Aguero] reacted incredibly well to the penalty, the team was mentally strong.”

Guardiola also provided an update on the fitness of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Bernardo Silva, with both doubtful for the clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

“They are feeling better but I don’t know if they are going to be fit for Sunday,” Guardiola added.

The City boss is wary of the threat posed by Crystal Palace, who produced a shock 3-2 win at the Etihad in December.

“They are really well organised and they have players up front who can do actions one v one, three v three,” Guardiola said.

“We have six games left and we’re going to prepare well.”

Malcom: Barcelona should be grateful Arsenal didn’t take him loan as he could be key in their end of season

It’s no secret that Arsenal and others have been keeping tabs on Malcom as he struggles to establish a spot at the Camp Nou this season, but getting rid of the summer signing would be rash.

Nothing about Malcom Filipe Silva de Oliveira’s nine months at FC Barcelona has been normal – even the way he was signed.

Malcom joined Barcelona for £37m in 2018 when it appeared he was heading to Roma

4

Malcom joined Barcelona for £37m in 2018 when it appeared he was heading to Roma

The Sao Paulo native was on his way to Roma from Bordeaux for his medical last July, hundreds of fans gathering at their sporting complex to greet the new signing.

Even his mother flew to the Italian capital, only for Barcelona to come steamrolling in at the last possible second with an offer the Ligue 1 side and the player couldn’t refuse.

The time since has been similarly unpredictable. Despite costing €41m, the Brazilian has played a miniscule amount of football this season. Yet taking a closer look at the details of the little he has featured reveals concentrated bursts of impressive quality.

Malcom has played little this season, but contributed a lot

4

Malcom has played little this season, but contributed a lot

There was a late equaliser in a key group stage game away to Inter, an equaliser in El Clasico, and a game-changing second-half appearance with an assist in last weekend’s Barcelona derby.

Most 22-year-olds would bite your hand off if offered that kind of impact over only six starts, particularly at a place as notoriously tricky to adapt to as the Camp Nou.

Yet Malcom’s season has had a disappointing tinge because of what he did after those impressive cameos. The Inter goal was followed by an anonymous hour in a disastrously embarrassing 4-3 home league loss to Real Betis, where a golden chance to shine in the absence of Ousmane Dembélé was blown.

The equaliser against Madrid was followed by a run of six games without playing a single minute: only Ernesto Valverde, who sees the winger in training when we don’t, knows why that was the case.

With the summer drawing closer, the rumours of a possible exit only grow in pace (and a winter exit to Arsenal only narrowly avoided), would Malcom follow his impressive showing in the Barcelona derby in a similarly confusing manner? Afforded a starting spot in their next match, away to Villarreal on Tuesday night, there could be no complaints of a lack of opportunities this time.

Malcom celebrates his goal in the 4-4 draw with Villarreal where he also created one

4

Malcom celebrates his goal in the 4-4 draw with Villarreal where he also created one

It only took 11 minutes for him to deliver. A brilliant, lung-bursting run into space onto a through ball caught the Villarreal backline flat-footed, and a tidily weighted pass on his weaker right foot to compatriot Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock at a time where the home team had clearly been the better side. Malcom’s grin from ear to ear told a story, and he would soon have cause to smile even more.

Just a few minutes later, with the Yellow Submarine still groggy, the assist provider turned scorer. Peeling away at the back post, his contact with Sergi Roberto’s cross was perfect, sending the header in the opposite direction and into the net well beyond Sergio Asenjo. This time the celebration was the expression of pure relief, the number 14 jumping into the air and pumping his fist. One goal, one assist, only fifteen minutes. If Valverde was looking for a response, there it was.

Malcom has started just twice in LaLiga this season, scoring once and creating two

4

Malcom has started just twice in LaLiga this season, scoring once and creating two

By the end of the first half Malcom had been hacked down several times by impotent opponents, sick of seeing him leave them in the dust – as clear an indicator of his threat as any. Significant too was that when Barcelona’s first change was made on the hour mark, it was Coutinho, not his fellow Brazilian, who was withdrawn for Lionel Messi. When Valverde made his final two substitutions, Malcom still stayed on the pitch. Barça eventually salvaged a draw at the death.

Prior to the visit to Villarreal, Valverde had spoken of what he hoped to see from Malcom when selected, ‘that he breaks into space on the wing and gives width to the team’. That’s exactly what the forward did against Villarreal, just as he did against Espanyol, and at the moment, no one else in Blaugrana does.

As one of the few genuine wide players in Barcelona’s squad, recent showings suggest the least-used of the Blaugrana’s summer signings could yet prove to be one of their trump cards in this key final phase of the season.

Despite being afforded so little time to shine, Malcom has still managed to do so, briefly. This week feels like a point of inflection for Barcelona’s last-minute newcomer. Or at least, it should be.
