Cristiano Ronaldo, who played for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury last month, opened the scoring for Juventus with his 125th Champions League goal.

But Neres’ equaliser keeps the tie alive for Ajax, who will go to Turin with confidence after beating holders Real Madrid 4-1 at the Bernabeu in the last round.

Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag said: ”1-1 is not the result you hope for, but it is a result.

“Last time we lost 2-1 to Madrid at home, so we are still in it. We had some very good opportunities.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells stories about 1999 to inspire Manchester United, Chris Smalling reveals

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reminds his Manchester United players of the dramatic Champions League final triumph in 1999 to inspire them, defender Chris Smalling has revealed.

Two stoppage time goals against Bayern Munich, including the winner from Solskjaer, saw the Red Devils complete one of the greatest comebacks in European football history at the Nou Camp 20 years ago.

And the Norwegian will return to Barcelona with United, this time as manager, as he attempts to overcome the odds once more and eliminate the irrepressible Spanish champions in the quarter-finals.

United set up the Barcelona clash with a miraculous comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round – and Smalling explains how the spirit of ’99 inspires the current squad.

The England international told talkSPORT: “The fact that he’s been there, done that and now he’s our manager… he’s able to share his insight in certain situations because ultimately that Champions League campaign [1998/99] had some blips along the way.

“Having what he’s gone through, for us, is a massive boost.

“He used it before PSG and before a couple of big games. That’s what we want to hear, we want to hear stories and he’s very good at telling things that he’s been through with Sir Alex [Ferguson] and as a player.

“To hear those is massive inspiration for all of us and helps lead to the comebacks that we’ve had.”

The Red Devils welcome Barca to Old Trafford on Wednesday night following a run of three defeats in their last four games.

However, Smalling insists United will thrive off the big occasion.

The 21-year-old, a product of the Tahuichi Soccer Academy in Bolivia, has never played for a professional club.

In an interview with Bolivian outlet Red Uno, the winger and his agent claim a one-year loan deal with an option to buy has already been agreed with Spurs – who have not confirmed the news.

The supposed transfer has become a big story in the Bolivian media after the player and his agent ‘confirmed’ the move on a local TV show at the end of last week.

And their most recent interview even features a clip of Torres signing a piece of paper with the Tottenham badge on it – described as a ‘pre-contract’ by the winger’s agent.

“We put together a folder that specifies his technical, tactical, physical and psychological skills, which we presented to sport entrepreneurs,” said Gonzalo Anciar.

England Women 0-1 Canada Women: Phil Neville’s side beaten in World Cup warm-up match

England Women suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first of their four ‘Road to France Series’ World Cup warm-up matches at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium.

Christine Sinclair was the matchwinner with a goal on 81 minutes after Nichelle Prince’s shot hit the bar – the goal Sinclair’s 180th international strike.

England, back in action after winning the invitational SheBelieves Cup for the first time last month, struggled to pose much of a threat in the first half until Nikita Parris brought a save out of Stephanie Labbe in the closing moments.

With Phil Neville’s Lionesses looking more dangerous after the break, Toni Duggan shot narrowly wide and, at the other end, goalkeeper Karen Bardsley made a fine save to deny Janine Beckie before Sinclair boosted her incredible goal haul with the winner.

England, with six changes to their starting line up from the 3-0 win over Japan with which they clinched the SheBelieves Cup, won a couple of early corners and one was headed by Lucy Bronze towards Jodie Taylor, who diverted the ball wide from inside the six-yard box, but the flag was up for offside.

Most of the chances there were for the rest of the half fell to Canada, with the first seeing Prince crack an effort out of the ground in the 16th minute.

Sophie Schmidt curled wide, Prince’s strike was blocked by England skipper Steph Houghton, and Jessie Fleming skewed a shot off-target from a good position following a miscued attempt at a clearance by Rachel Daly.

England did go close just before the interval as Parris struck from the edge of the box and the diving Labbe turned the ball behind.

Duggan shot over shortly after the break, before Bardsley produced a fine save to keep out a strike from her Manchester City team-mate Beckie.

Karen Carney subsequently put one attempt onto the roof of the net and had another saved by Labbe, and after Bardsley dealt with a Schmidt effort, Duggan nearly broke the deadlock in the 59th minute as her shot went inches wide.

The pace dropped after that and the game was looking to be destined to finish goalless, but Canada then grabbed the lead as Prince rattled the bar and Sinclair controlled the loose ball before prodding in.

Demi Stokes shooting into the side-netting soon after was the closest England came to finding an equaliser.

Their next warm-up game ahead of the World Cup in France sees them take on Spain at Swindon’s Energy Check County Ground on Tuesday.

Rangers 2019/20 home shirt: Leaked images show off new design for Steven Gerrard’s side

Rangers are the latest Scottish heavyweight side to have images of their shirt for the 2019/20 season leaked.

Legendary Danish brand Hummel, in their second year of producing kits for Steven Gerrard’s men, have created a classic looking design, with the trademark blue and red instantly recognisable, while managing to give it a modern feel.

As shown on Footy Headlines, the famous chevrons run down either shoulder, while there is a a subtle striped jacquard pattern on the front of the kit, which appears to be a slightly darker shade of blue than usual.

Both the collar and the cuffs are trimmed in white and completed with two red stripes and betting company, 32RED are again the main sponsor.

Puma were the last manufacturers of Rangers kit and it is believed up to 10 parties were interested in taking over to produce kits for the blue half of Glasgow, but Hummel got the nod and are two years into an initial three-year partnership.

Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, trailing leaders Celtic by 11 points and travel to Hearts on Saturday lunchtime.

Manchester United news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refuses to blame David de Gea for faltering Premier League top-four hopes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to blame under-fire goalkeeper David de Gea for Manchester United’s faltering top four hopes.

The Spaniard was at fault for Chelsea’s equaliser in Sunday’s 1-1 draw after spilling Antonio Rudiger long-range effort, which allowed Marcos Alonso to slot home the rebound.

David de Gea is enduring a tough time in goal

David de Gea is enduring a tough time in goal

It was De Gea’s third error leading to a goal in his last four games – and his second blunder in less than a week as he failed to keep out Leroy Sane’s strike in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

United are in danger of missing out on Champions League football as they trail fourth-placed Chelsea by three points with two games to go.

But De Gea, whose contract expires next summer, has been backed to return to form by his manager.

Solskjaer said: “He’s been in the spotlight for the right reasons for so long, now he’s going through a period where he probably feels he could have done better.

“I don’t have any worries about him because he’s a strong character.

Marcos Alonso capitalised on David de Gea’s error

2

Marcos Alonso capitalised on David de Gea’s error

“Of course I’ll sit down and speak to David as I’ve done when he’s played well. But he’s not the reason why we’re in the sixth position at the moment.

“You cannot say there is any complacency, David is not the type to sit down and be complacent. He is a competitor and he wants to be the best.

“David knows he could have done better with the goal, there’s no reason to hide that, but there’s no chance any of us will point fingers because he’s saved us so many times.”

United’s potential failure to secure Champions League football could see them lose De Gea and Paul Pogba.

Solskjaer’s men will need to beat Huddersfield and Cardiff to stand any chance of overcoming top-four rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Norwegian added: “Of course if you look at the league table it’s going to be difficult.

“We’ve got to make sure we turn up, win the next two games, play well and you never know.

“Points are being dropped left, right and centre in this race.”
