Sam Allardyce believes Premier League champions Manchester City are still not as good a team as Manchester United’s treble-winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pep Guardiola’s City side have broken Premier League records and set a new benchmark for success in the English top flight.
They have recorded the two highest ever finishes in their last two campaigns, winning the title twice on the bounce with a haul of 100 points and 98 points.
Their fight with Liverpool this season, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds finishing just one point behind as runners-up, has been hailed as the best title race in the Premier League era and perhaps the best in English football history.

But while it has been a battle for the ages, it is not rare for the title race to go right to the wire. In fact, this is the ninth time the title has been decided on the final day.
talkSPORT host Alan Brazil agrees with the widespread claim that this City team are the best we have ever seen in the English game.
But, sitting opposite Alan on Tuesday’s Sports Breakfast, Allardyce said: “I’m not so sure they beat Fergie yet.
“Fergie won the Premier League three times on the trot [he actually did this twice: 1998-2001 and 2006-2009] and won the treble.
“If you talk about the fact Man City are very close, I’d agree with that, but I don’t think they’re quite Manchester United.
“You forget how great they were in the past, how big the challenges were at the time and how good their players were.
“And I’m not so sure the lower end of the Premier League is quite as good as they used to be in the early 2000s. Personally, I think the teams were a lot stronger in the lower half of the Premier League than they are now.”
