Callum Hudson-Odoi: Why Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri should be lauded for treatment of winger

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Why Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri should be lauded for treatment of winger

If Chelsea fans weren’t so busy waiting to boo Jorginho, they might realise that Maurizio Sarri has finally given them what they’ve wanted for years.

In a turbulent decade at Stamford Bridge, one thing has remained the same: Chelsea’s utter refusal to use any talent produced by their world class academy.

Hudson-Odoi is the youngest ever Chelsea player to start four consecutive Premier League games

Hudson-Odoi is the youngest ever Chelsea player to start four consecutive Premier League games

Bright futures have ultimately been destined to fade away during never ending loan spells, with Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Chalobah eventually giving up.

But things are different this season. On Monday night, 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi and 23-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek made their fourth consecutive starts in the Premier League during the 2-2 draw with Burnley.

Yet, the overwhelming feeling among the Chelsea faithful seems to be that it took too long. After all, Hudson-Odoi only started his first top flight game earlier this month, despite already becoming a full England international beforehand.

His season suffered a cruel end against Burnley when he ruptured his Achilles on Monday night, but when the teenager reflects on his rise to stardom this term, he’ll have Sarri to thank.

The Italian isn’t winning any popularity contests at Chelsea, and it would’ve been easy to give in to fans’ pleas and start Hudson-Odoi prematurely.

Pressure grew when the youngster handed in a transfer request amid interest from Bayern Munich, but still, Sarri continued to slowly ease the forward into the team.

Hudson-Odoi’s season is over

3

Hudson-Odoi’s season is over

This is how you should do it, right? He’s 18, what’s the rush?

When you’ve got Willian, Pedro and Eden Hazard ahead of you, any first-team opportunity is a blessing.

He developed and grew in confidence with each Europa League appearance and every cameo from the bench, until he was ready.

In his press conferences, Sarri always offered perspective and compared Hudson-Odoi’s game time to other teenagers across Europe, and he was right.

Contrary to popular belief, there’s aren’t actually many 18-year-olds running around Europe’s top clubs every week. It’s not the norm. Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon is the only player under the age of 19 to start more Premier League games than Hudson-Odoi this season.

Don’t be fooled, Jadon Sancho’s breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund doesn’t suddenly make Germany the place to go for youth. Sancho, 19, played a similar role to Hudson-Odoi last season before emerging as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents a year later.

It certainly doesn’t make Bayern Munich the right destination for Hudson-Odoi. They aren’t exactly champions of youth. This is a club which lost Douglas Costa because they preferred to pick Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Why would Hudson-Odoi leave? As a youngster, he has discovered a rarity: a Chelsea manager who trusts him.

It’s worth noting the talented teen hasn’t set the world alight during this spell of games, especially against Liverpool at Anfield, but Sarri stuck with him anyway.

Besides, with doubt surrounding the future of Eden Hazard; Willian and Pedro both in their thirties; and Chelsea’s transfer ban – the window of opportunity could not be wider.

Sarri has shown an admirable sense of calm and rationality among the Hudson-Odoi hysteria to carefully manage the youngster’s development – and for that, he deserves credit.

Emery is hopeful Arsenals history can convince big player’s to join the club despite another season without Champions League football

Arsenal face a third consecutive season without Champions League football and manager Unai Emery faces a tough job chasing new faces as a result.

They have not won a league title since 2004, but the manager is hopeful of the club’s name is still a big enough draw and could use their past success to point to a potentially bright future.

“History doesn’t win you anything. History doesn’t win you games,” he told Five Live after the game.

“The thing is you talk about the big player coming in, it’s the mentality at the club.

“One player, I’m telling you, you put [Virgil] van Dijk in that back four at the moment, the way that the team is set up without the ball it wouldn’t make much difference.”

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool for £75m in January 2018 has developed into one of the world’s best defenders and was named Player of the Year by his fellow footballers.

The Reds, who finished second with 97 points, conceded just 22 goals all season, but Dixon believes it will take a lot more than one star name to dig them out of a hole.

Chelsea loanee Tiemoue Bakayoko ‘considering AC Milan future’ after suffering racial abuse

Chelsea loanee Tiemoue Bakayoko is reportedly considering his AC Milan future after suffering racial abuse.

The France midfielder was targeted by Lazio fans during Milan’s Coppa Italia semi-final defeat last Wednesday.

Tiemoue Bakayoko has been a hit at the San Siro this season

Prior to kick-off, around 50 Lazio supporters displayed a banner reading ‘Honour to Benito Mussolini’ – the Italian fascist dictator.

Racist chants of ‘this Banana is for Bakayoko’ were believed to be heard from fans throughout the clash.

Lazio released a statement condemning the vile abuse.

It read: â€Å“SS Lazio clearly distance ourselves from behaviour and manifestations that do not in any way correspond to the values of sport that this club has promoted and supported for 119 years.

â€Å“Lazio also reject and contest the simplistic tendency of the media to consider the entire Lazio fanbase responsible for the actions of a few isolated elements, for motivation that has nothing to do with passion for sport.

â€Å“The club has always fought for the respect of law and fairness in behaviour.”

Italian publication La Repubblica report Bakayoko has been ‘very hurt’ by the abuse.

The 24-year-old, who joined Chelsea in a £40million deal from Monaco in 2017, has enjoyed a successful season in Milan after a slow start, playing 39 times so far.

Bakayoko admitted in February it would be a ‘dream’ to make his loan move a permanent one when the transfer window reopens this summer.

He said: â€Å“It’s a matter for Milan and Chelsea.

â€Å“Staying at Milan is my dream, that’s the only thought in my mind, but I have a contract with Chelsea.

â€Å“I just want to finish the season in fourth place, then we’ll think about it.”

Gennaro Gattuso, the Milan coach, downplayed rumours Bakayoko will turn down a permanent switch ahead of Sunday’s defeat by Torino.

“He is on good form,” said Gattuso. “Those horrible songs hurt but he was prepared for them. he behaved admirably and he did not lose his head.

“He looks in good form, that he wants to leave is something [the media] are saying. He’s had a good season and he feels good in Italy.”

Bakayoko is the latest player to be racially targeted this season, with Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi also suffering abuse throughout 2018/19.
