McClean has once again been the target of abuse

Last year he was victimised by his own supporters at Stoke over his decision, and McClean branded his critics ‘uneducated cavemen’ in an emotional social media post.

The winger was warned by the Football Association for using an offensive word in his Instagram post, and he went on to accuse English football’s governing body of anti-Irish bias.

It was confirmed by then Stoke manager Gary Rowett that McClean had been receiving death threats and abusive packages in the weeks following Remembrance Sunday, and it appears he has been sent another.

McClean, who turned 30 on April 22, shared a picture on Twitter of a card he received which read ‘happy birthday and die’, ‘have an amazing death’ and ‘Fenian sub human bastard’.

Further messages inside the card called Bobby Sands, who died at HM Prison Maze on hunger strike, the 1981 ‘Slimmer of the Year’, while it was also written that Hitler ‘would have sorted the IRA in a month’.

McClean shared the picture with the caption ‘no words needed’.

McClean’s wife, Erin, also shared images of the card on social media. She called the individuals who sent the abusive package ‘sickos’.
