Gary McAllister attacked: Man arrested in connection with assault of former Leeds United and Liverpool star

A man has been arrested in connection with the attack on Gary McAllister that left the former Leeds United and Liverpool star hospitalised.


McAllister, the current Rangers assistant, required stitches after being punched in the face in Leeds city centre last Sunday.

There were suggestions the assailant may have been wearing a knuckle duster or similar device, while he was reported to have hospitalised four other people, including two women.


McAllister, 54, had 12 stitches and plastic surgery on his lip, and spent this week recovering at his home in Tadcaster.


Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, confirmed police were investigating the incident, which took place at around 4am on Sunday morning.















And West Yorkshire Police have now arrested a man in connection with the assault.


“Police have arrested a man in connection with an assault which happened in Leeds city centre last weekend,” a statement read.

“The incident happened on Sunday 24 March at around 4am where a male in his fifties was assaulted in Call Lane.


“The male victim was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment.





“A 32-year-old male was arrested last night (28 March) in connection with this incident.


“He has been released under investigation and enquiries remain ongoing.”


McAllister was attacked after going out for dinner with his wife, Hayley, having spent the day at Anfield watching Liverpool Legends defeat AC Milan.


The former Scotland international spent two years playing for the Reds, and also represented Motherwell, Leicester, Leeds and Coventry throughout a 23-year professional career.


He has been Rangers assistant manager since last summer, joining former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff at Ibrox.
