Venezuelan player has contract terminated for scuffing Panenka penalty in Copa Sudamerica shootout

A Venezuelan player was axed by his club after his Panenka penalty was saved in a shootout.

Independiente de Campo Grande player Brendix Parra was made to look foolish in the penalty shootout against La Equidad in the Copa Sudamerica.

He went for a chip to try and beat Diego Novoa but could only hit it against his chest.

Independiente were dumped out of the competition and Parra had his contract terminated as a result.

Club president Eriberto Gamarra told ABC Cardinal: “The board of directors decided to dismiss Brendix Parra for the way he kicked the penalty.

“If we had qualified to the next round each player would have earned a bit of money.”

Parra appears to have taken the news well, though. “It’s a difficult situation, but life goes on,” he said.

He was not the first and certainly will not be the last to attempt a Panenka penalty in a high pressure situation.

Zinedine Zidane famously beat Gianluigi Buffon with a Panenka in the 2006 World Cup final.

Sergio Ramos’ nonchalant spot-kick in the Euro 2012 semi-final shootout against Portugal showed he had nerves of steel.

In that same tournament, Andrea Pirlo chipped the ball past Joe Hart from the spot in Italy’s match with England.

Get it wrong and it can end horribly.

Yann Kermorgant is disliked by Leicester City fans after his fluffed Panenka in the Championship play-off semi-final shootout against Cardiff City.

Vancouver’s Ali Adnan produced one of the worst earlier this month against LA Galaxy after they were awarded a spot-kick in the first minute.

Which was for $90M. As an 18 year old. It's worked out for Nike considering they recently gave him a lifetime deal worth over $1B.
