Mike Dean’s wild celebrations at the end of Tranmere Rovers’ victory over Forest Green ensured the referee made headlines for the right reasons.
The Premier League referee, a lifelong fan of the club, punched the air at full-time as his side won their League Two play-off semi-final against Forest Green.
Dean had refereed Arsenal’s Premier League win against Burnley at Turf Moor on the final day of the season, but still had plenty of energy 24 hours later to cheer James Norwood’s goal – his 32nd of the season – against his former club, which earned Micky Mellon’s side a 2-1 aggregate win.
Rovers are aiming for back-to-back promotions, having gone up through the National League play-offs last season and will face Newport County at Wembley on Saturday, May 25.
But, here at talkSPORT.com, it got us thinking about which other teams Premier League referees support.
According to official guidelines, referees cannot be appointed to their own team’s games or to take charge of teams which could have a geographical sway.
“At the beginning of every season the referees’ background information is audited,” said Keith Hackett, the former head of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the organisation which makes refereeing appointments for Premier League games.
“They complete a form that includes who they support, the history of if they’ve played the game and with the addresses where they are residing.
“That gives you a picture that comes into use when you’re appointing. It’s about ensuring, for example, you wouldn’t appoint a Sheffield-based ref for a Sheffield team.”
So, without further ado, scroll down to see if your team has a famous (or infamous) fan!
