Tottenham news: Clive Allen explains how Spurs can beat Manchester City in the Champions League

Tottenham must be brave and attack Manchester City if they want to upset the odds and progress from their Champions League quarter-final, insists Spurs legend Clive Allen.

The north Londoners welcome the champions to their new stadium on Wednesday night and enter the tie as underdogs.

City have won all of their last 14 games as they bid to complete an unprecedented quadruple.

However, Pep Guardiola’s men were dumped out at this stage of the competition last season by a Liverpool side who refused to stand off them.

Harry Kane prepares for the quarter-final clash

And Allen suggests this has to be the blueprint for beating City.

“They’ve got to be brave and positive. Get on the front foot, press City,” he told talkSPORT 2.

“But you’ve got to be very cautious as well because they’re an exceptional team. They’ve won 14 games on the bounce.

“I was at Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton and they’re maybe looking a little bit jaded, but that’s me with my Spurs cap on.”

However, Allen is worried Tottenham’s magnificent new stadium could actually work against the hosts and inspire the visitors.

“They’ve got so many experienced players who have played at the highest level. I’m a little bit worried that it might inspire them [City] to perform,” he added.

A ‘number’ of Premier League clubs are considering installing safe standing sections in time for next season, talkSPORT has been told.

62 per cent of MPs now support standing in the top two divisions, according to a survey.

Rail seating could soon be utilised by Premier League clubs

The increased support has led to speculation a law-change could soon occur, which would overturn the all-seater legislation introduced at the start of the 1994/95 season at the recommendation of the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster.

Michael Burnett, the Managing Director of Ferco Seating, said: “There are two aspects to it. Firstly, it produces the right crowd experience and secondly it might even provide additional revenue for the clubs.”

Mr Burnett believes the rail seating section installed during the construction of Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium showed there is backing for safe standing.

He continued: “Because the seats are still available, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport could say they’re not approving standing at football grounds… they’re just approving putting handrails behind ordinary seats.

“It’s a typical politician’s way of nearly admitting that they want to change something.”

Wolves installed various safe standing options at Molineux in January, making them the first Premier League club to do so at their current stadium.

Ferco Seating installed nearly 3,000 rail seats at Celtic Park in 2016.

Xherdan Shaqiri: Liverpool midfielder withdraws from Switzerland squad due to ‘inflammation in the pubic area’

Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri has withdrawn from Switzerland’s squad for their matches against Georgia and Denmark due to a rather embarrassing injury.

The Swiss national team’s Twitter account confirmed Shaqiri’s exit on Monday evening, and revealed just why the 27-year-old cannot play for his country this month.

Without giving an explanation as to how Shaqiri suffered his injury (which we are thankful for, really), it was confirmed the midfielder has ‘inflammation in the pubic area’.

The Liverpool ace misses Switzerland’s opening two Euro 2020 qualifiers, away in Georgia on Saturday before Denmark visit Basel next Tuesday.

The three countries are joined in Group D by Gibraltar and the Republic of Ireland in the race to qualify for Euro 2020.

The top two finishers book their place in next summer’s finals tournament, though Switzerland are already assured of at least a play-off place due to their performances in the Nations League.

Shaqiri joined Liverpool from Stoke last summer and has scored six times for the title-chasing Reds.

Tottenham new stadium latest: Spurs to ‘suspend fans who resell tickets’ for opening match with pair going for £1,200 on social media

Tottenham have warned supporters they could have their season tickets suspended if discovered trying to profit from the club’s move to their new stadium.

Spurs will finally move into the £1billion structure next month, with Crystal Palace visiting the ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’ on April 3 as the first official fixture.

Tottenham’s new stadium will finally open next month

Tottenham’s new stadium will finally open next month

They will then take on Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals a week later, with four further Premier League home matches remaining before the end of the season.

The north London club have already confirmed they are freezing season ticket prices for 2019/20 – their first full campaign at the new ground – but some people could find their tickets suspended if found guilty of selling their seats for next month’s Crystal Palace clash.

Tottenham are aware of some supporters listing their tickets for sale on social media, with the Telegraph reporting on one advert which lists two tickets for £1,200.

And Spurs have threatened to punish supporters who breach the club’s terms and conditions apropos the buying of tickets.

A Tottenham spokesperson said: “Season-ticket holders or anyone else selling their tickets on social-media platforms and other unofficial websites are in breach of the club’s terms and conditions, therefore leaving themselves liable to having their accounts suspended.

“The only official way to transfer tickets is via Ticket Exchange or Ticket Share which become operational on the date tickets go on sale.”

Tottenham’s Ticket Exchange is for the selling of tickets at face value for any match a ticket holder cannot attend, while Ticket Share allows a nominated individual to use a season ticket holder’s ticket.

Spurs originally planned to move into their new stadium last September, but various delays have pushed the opening date back by almost seven months.

The Champions League final is the biggest football match in Tottenham Hotspur history and Harry Kane is doing all he can to be fit for it.

England captain Kane, 25, has been incredible for Spurs since his breakthrough in 2014 and represents just how far the club has come in those five years.

An ankle injury against Manchester City in the same competition in early April saw him miss the end of the Premier League season but now he might come back for the clash with Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

It’s touch and go with manager Mauricio Pochettino coy on his star man’s fitness, while Kane himself reckons he’s ready and raring to go.

“I feel good,” said the striker.

“I started to feel my way back with the team at the end of last week and there have been no problems so far.

“For me this week now is to get the fitness as high as possible.

“Then it’s down to the manager. Like I said, I feel good. The manager will assess it and decide whether I’m ready to go or not. But so far, I feel good and ready.

“I did a lot of work on my own to get me into a good place to go back with the team.

“Since I’ve been with them, I’ve been full training, doing everything.

But how will Tottenham look on Saturday night if Kane is named in the first XI?

Is this how Spurs could look on Saturday?

In the two clubs’ first meeting this season, Pochettino favoured a diamond formation and while Liverpool won, and could have scored more had it not been for Michel Vorm, it’s something he could go for again as it allows his team to be flexible in and out of possession.

With Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko in central midfield, Spurs can get full-backs Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose high up the pitch while keeping four players deep, with Dele Alli also driving into space further forward, while Heung-Min Son and Kane will stretch the Liverpool backline by shifting slightly wider.

In defensive phases, the formation allows Tottenham to protect their back-four but also get Sissoko and Alli pressing opponents and helping the full-backs out with extra cover while keeping two men in the centre of the pitch, with Eriksen filling in where needed. Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane can both lend a hand or stay forward, keeping the Liverpool midfield and defence on their toes.

But what happens without Kane, if he’s only fit for the bench?

Is this how Tottenham will look if Kane doesn’t start?

Is this how Tottenham will look if Kane doesn’t start?

In this case we could see Spurs go with a back-three, which is bold against Liverpool.

It will help ease pressure when they have possession and give more protection against counter-attacks, especially with the quick Colombian Davinson Sanchez in the middle.

Meanwhile, in defensive phases it will allow the wing-backs and the right and left centre-backs to stymie Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, with Sissoko and Eriksen covering the centre of the park.

Can Spurs stifle Mohamed Salah in Madrid?

Can Spurs stifle Mohamed Salah in Madrid?

Lucas, Spurs’ hero in Amsterdam, would come in up top alongside Heung-Min Son, with Dele Alli providing probing runs between them, which should be enough to worry the Liverpool defence and keep them on their toes with their pace and pressing.

It’s never going to be easy against Liverpool but Tottenham’s never say die attitude in the Champions League shows they’re not going to go down without a fight – with or without Harry Kane.
